NYPD officer off-duty stabbed in Long Island car robbery; suspect taken into custody.

A 27-year-old man from Manhattan was apprehended in Lindenhurst, Long Island, early Thursday morning after allegedly attacking an off-duty New York Police Department (NYPD) officer who attempted to intervene during a suspected vehicle break-in. The incident took place shortly after 1 a.m., according to a spokesperson from the Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD).

The man, identified as Royal Hooks, has been charged with second-degree felony assault and misdemeanor petit larceny. The police report reveals that Hooks was observed entering a parked vehicle situated in a driveway on 40th Street, near Buffalo Avenue, by two off-duty NYPD officers. When the officers confronted him, Hooks reportedly fled on foot, leading to a brief pursuit.

As the officers closed in on Hooks, he allegedly turned and attacked one of them, stabbing him in the left leg before he could be apprehended. Following the incident, Hooks was detained and backup was requested. He was subsequently arrested by the Suffolk County Police and taken to the First Precinct for processing. Sources indicate that he is scheduled to appear for arraignment in Central Islip court later today.

The officer who sustained the injury, a 28-year-old, was promptly transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Reports indicate that while the injury is serious, it is not life-threatening. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and authorities are reviewing the circumstances surrounding the altercation.

This violent encounter underscores the broader concerns regarding safety and crime in urban areas, particularly involving police officers who are off-duty. As incidents like this become increasingly frequent, law enforcement agencies are continually evaluating their strategies for community engagement and crime prevention.

The implications of this event raise questions about public safety and the risks faced by law enforcement personnel during their off-duty hours. As the legal proceedings move forward, the community will be closely monitoring the case to gauge its impact on local safety in the coming months.

This incident serves as a reminder of the challenges that law enforcement officers face daily, even when they are not on the clock.
