Obama musical comedy ’44’ scheduled for off-Broadway performance this fall.

The musical comedy “44,” which humorously chronicles the historic rise and presidency of former President Barack Obama, is set to debut off-Broadway in New York City this fall. Following successful engagements in both Los Angeles and Chicago, the production will begin a limited eight-week run at The Daryl Roth Theatre on October 14. This news was announced recently by the show’s producers.

Written, composed, and directed by Eli Bauman, a former staff member of the Obama campaign, “44” aims to present a satirical narrative that explores not only Obama’s political journey but also the colorful cast of characters he encountered during his presidency. Producers have described the musical as the “story of Obama you won’t read about in history books,” a reflection on contemporary issues surrounding education and historical narrative in the context of ongoing debates about book bans in various states. The production also offers a humorous twist, suggesting that this version of history is “how Joe Biden kinda sorta remembers it.”

Tickets for “44” will go on sale on August 4, coinciding with a special promotion that offers tickets at , in honor of Obama’s 64th birthday. The previous performance in Chicago garnered positive critical acclaim, with local reviewers noting its entertaining and engaging storytelling. Daily News drama critic Chris Jones remarked on the show’s ability to captivate audiences, stating that it deftly “tickled” him throughout the performance.

The musical, with the full title “44: The (un)Official, (un)Sanctioned Obama Musical,” previously played to enthusiastic crowds during a workshop production at Racket NYC last June. The cast features T.J. Wilkins, a season six participant from “The Voice,” in the role of Barack Obama, alongside R&B artist Shanice, who portrays Michelle Obama. The ensemble also includes voice actor Chad Doreck as Joe Biden, supplemented by Kevin Bailey, Larry Cedar, Marqell Edward Clayton, Kelley Dorney, and Summer Nicole Greer, who take on various roles representing notable figures within the Obama administration during the 2008 election period.

Bauman, the creative force behind the show, is the son of Jon “Bowzer” Bauman from the band Sha Na Na. His background includes early political organizing for Obama in Las Vegas, as well as playing a significant role in coordinating Veterans Affairs for the president-elect’s inaugural committee in 2009. With engaging performances and a relatable narrative, “44” promises to offer audiences a unique perspective on American political history through the lens of musical theater.
