Over 60 reported dead in Nigeria boat sinking incident, officials confirm.

At least 60 lives have tragically been lost, with numerous others rescued, following a boat capsizing incident in Niger State, Nigeria, which has drawn attention to the ongoing safety concerns in the region’s waterways. The boat departed from Tungan Sule in the Malale district around 11 AM local time, en route to Dugga on Nigeria’s Kainji reservoir. The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) reported that preliminary investigations attribute the disaster to overloading and the vessel’s unfortunate collision with an underwater obstruction. The agency highlighted that a significant number of those onboard included women and children, many of whom were traveling for a condolence visit.

Director General Abdullahi Baba Ara stated that the situation remains fluid, with the number of casualties potentially increasing as search and rescue operations continue for those still missing. As of Wednesday, reports indicated that 60 individuals had perished in this tragic event, with ten more found in critical condition.

Sa’adu Inuwa Muhammad, the district head of Shagumi, witnessed the scene shortly after the accident and confirmed that the boat was indeed carrying more than 100 passengers. Rescue teams have so far recovered 31 bodies from the river, with some victims already laid to rest in accordance with Islamic customs, honoring their traditions.

Boating accidents pose a recurrent challenge in Nigeria, particularly in riverine communities like those in Niger State, especially during the rainy season from March to October when waterways can overflow.
