Peloton recalls over 830,000 bikes due to fall risk; two injuries reported.
Peloton is initiating a significant recall of more than 830,000 Original Series Bike+ units due to safety concerns related to the potential for rider accidents. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the voluntary recall on Thursday, citing issues with the seat post assembly in specific models manufactured between December 2019 and July 2022.
The affected bikes, identified by model number PL02 and serial numbers beginning with the letter “T,” present a risk of the seat post breaking during use. This malfunction could lead to falls and consequential injuries among consumers. Peloton has recorded three incidents of seat post failure during exercise sessions, two of which resulted in injuries related to falls. In total, approximately 833,000 units have been sold in the United States, while an additional 44,800 units in Canada have not reported any similar issues.
The Original Series Bike+ was prominently marketed at a retail price of around ,495 and was available for purchase from major retailers including Dick’s Sporting Goods, online platforms such as onepeloton.com, and other e-commerce sites like Amazon and eBay, from January 2020 through April 2025.
In light of the safety recall, Peloton is advising users to cease using the potentially affected bikes immediately. The company has arranged for complimentary seat post replacements, which consumers can install themselves. Detailed instructions are available on the company’s website to facilitate this process.
This recall follows a previous announcement in May 2023, when Peloton addressed similar concerns related to the original model of its bikes sold between January 2018 and May 2023. During that recall, the company identified 35 reports of seat posts breaking among over 2 million units sold, which included 13 documented injuries ranging from wrist fractures to various lacerations and bruises.
The safety of its consumers remains paramount, and Peloton continues to take proactive steps to ensure that their products meet rigorous safety standards. As the company navigates these challenges, it underscores the importance of user safety in the increasingly popular realm of at-home fitness equipment. Media News Source.
