Phil Collins reveals health challenges and shares he now requires 24-hour live-in care.

Phil Collins, the acclaimed musician and former drummer of the legendary band Genesis, has disclosed the extent of his ongoing health challenges which have significantly impacted his career. In a recent interview, Collins revealed that he is receiving round-the-clock care due to complications from a spinal injury sustained in 2007, which led to dislocated vertebrae and subsequent nerve damage in his hands.

Collins’ health issues began a decade ago and were compounded by a fall that occurred in 2017, necessitating the use of a cane for mobility. Now, at the age of 75, with his birthday approaching on January 30, Collins shared details about his daily life and the challenges he faces. He explained to a BBC audience that he has a live-in nurse to ensure he adheres to his medication regimen. His health struggles have not been limited to his spine; he has also endured multiple surgeries on his knee, of which only one is currently functional. This has understandably impacted his ability to walk unaided.

In addition to these physical ailments, Collins has battled type 2 diabetes since 2017 and has experienced complications related to heavy drinking, which have adversely affected his kidneys. After a period of grappling with alcohol dependency, he has reportedly maintained sobriety for the past two years. He expressed that stepping away from the rigors of touring has contributed positively to his health.

Collins noted that his drinking had become problematic, though he recounted, he was not a nightly drinker. He mentioned spending extensive time in the hospital, where he faced various health crises including complications from COVID-19 and kidney issues. Despite these challenges, he has conveyed a sense of resilience and has sought to find stability in his life.

In 2021, during Genesis’s farewell tour, Collins informed fans that he struggled with a degenerative condition that impaired his ability to perform. While concerns regarding his health escalated last summer—with rumors swirling that he was terminally ill—his representatives clarified that his hospitalization was solely for knee surgery.

Best known for hits such as “Against All Odds” and “In the Air Tonight,” Collins acknowledged his waning desire to create music amidst his ongoing health issues. He expressed that while he still considers returning to the studio, his motivation has diminished, reflecting the toll that his physical ailments have taken on his passion for music.

Overall, Collins remains a beloved figure in the music industry, and while his health journey has been fraught with challenges, he continues to navigate this chapter of his life with a mixture of determination and acceptance.
