Philadelphia police fatally shoot carjacker following high-speed chase.
Philadelphia police officers were involved in a fatal shooting incident on Monday night after pursuing a man who had allegedly led them on a high-speed chase through the city. The incident unfolded following a reported carjacking and shooting that resulted in one person’s injury. According to police reports, the sequence of events began around 7:11 p.m. when officers responded to a shooting at a Public Storage facility located on the 500 block of East Hunting Park Avenue in North Philadelphia.
Upon arrival, law enforcement found a 32-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen. This individual was injured during a carjacking, during which Jerome Cooper, 51, allegedly approached him at gunpoint and stole his Toyota Camry. Investigators indicated that Cooper also exchanged gunfire with a third individual, a 29-year-old man, before fleeing the scene in the stolen vehicle while continuing to fire shots.
The injured man was promptly transported to Temple University Hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition. Meanwhile, Cooper’s subsequent actions escalated dramatically, as he instigated a police chase that took place throughout various neighborhoods in the city. During this pursuit, Cooper reportedly fired shots at the officers from the window of the stolen car, particularly in the vicinity of the 700 block of East Cheltenham Avenue.
The chase culminated when Cooper crashed the vehicle into a grassy median at the 4600 block of Roosevelt Boulevard. At this point, he exited the car and allegedly aimed his weapon at the pursuing officers. In response, seven officers discharged their firearms at Cooper, striking him multiple times.
Cooper was transported to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after 9 p.m. The officers involved in the shooting came from diverse units within the Philadelphia Police Department, including the 15th District and the 25th District, as well as five officers from the highway patrol. They ranged in age from 29 to 55 years old.
The situation remains under investigation by police, with an emphasis on understanding the specific circumstances that led to the shooting. Additionally, the actions of the individual who fired back at Cooper during the initial carjacking are also being examined by both the police department and the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office. As standard procedure, all seven officers involved have been placed on administrative duty while investigations continue.
