Philly man apprehended after 2-year-old accidentally shoots himself with unattended gun at home.
A 20-year-old man from Philadelphia has been arrested following a tragic incident in which a 2-year-old child accidentally shot himself in the abdomen. The firearm was reportedly left unattended in the child’s home located in West Philadelphia. The incident, which occurred on Monday, prompted immediate action from local law enforcement, culminating in charges against Rahmir Ponzo for child endangerment and recklessly endangering another person.
According to police authorities, the shooting occurred shortly before 1:45 PM on Monday. Responding officers found the young boy with a gunshot wound and quickly transported him to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Medical personnel noted that the child underwent surgery and remains in critical condition. While the child was confirmed to live at the residence, police have not disclosed the specifics of his relationship to Ponzo.
Later that same day, another shooting incident took place just blocks away, further raising concerns about gun violence in the area. Around 4:20 PM, a 5- or 6-year-old girl was struck in the leg by gunfire while she was on the front porch of her home on the 5900 block of Pine Street, surrounded by family. Emergency responders transported her to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where she was reported to be in stable condition the following day.
Police officials indicate that this second shooting was the result of an earlier argument that escalated. During this confrontation, an individual had allegedly threatened people at the residence before departing. Subsequently, a group of four men arrived at the scene, during which one individual opened fire, injuring the young girl.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into both incidents and have not yet made any arrests in the latter shooting. The local community remains on edge as conversations about child safety and gun control gain renewed emphasis in the wake of these distressing events.
This series of incidents underscores a prevalent issue regarding firearm safety and the critical need for responsible gun ownership, especially in households with children. As the investigation unfolds, public scrutiny and calls for action regarding gun legislation are expected to intensify in Philadelphia and beyond.
