Philly Music Scene Highlights Jingle Ball, MGK, The Happy Fits, The Starting Line, and Algernon Cadwallader Upcoming Performances

This week in Philadelphia’s vibrant music scene features an array of concerts highlighting both local talent and national acts, underscoring the city’s enduring love for diverse musical genres. Notably, two prominent Philadelphia pop-punk bands, The Starting Line and Algernon Cadwallader, have reunited to perform, and their shows promise to captivate fans of the genre.

The Happy Fits, a pop-rock quartet that emerged from Pittstown, New Jersey, will headline a performance at The Fillmore on Thursday. Frontman Calvin Longman leads the group, which is touring in support of their fourth studio album, “Lovesick.” This album marks a pivotal moment for the band, as it is their first since the departure of founding member Ross Monteith, with new members Nico Rose and Raina Mullen joining the lineup.

Also on Thursday, British duo The Heavy Heavy will grace the stage at Brooklyn Bowl Philadelphia. Known for their retro-inspired rock sound reminiscent of the 1960s and early ’70s, the group blends heartfelt songwriting with a nod to counterculture-era aesthetics.

JD McPherson, a distinguished artist known for his rockabilly and R&B-infused tracks, will perform at Arden Gild Hall in Wilmington on Thursday as part of his “A Rock ’N’ Roll Christmas Tour.” His set will include songs from his latest album, “Nite Owls,” alongside tracks from his earlier works.

Los Angeles-based alt-pop artist King Mala, featuring the El Paso native Areli Lopez, will perform at Nikki Lopez on South Street, showcasing her full-length debut album, “And You Who Drowned in the Grief of a Golden Thing,” on Thursday night.

The Dream Syndicate will take the stage at Johnny Brenda’s on Friday, performing songs from their 1984 album “Medicine Show,” which showcased a mix of neo-noir mystery with Southern literary influences. This show will highlight the band’s evolution while celebrating their legacy within the Los Angeles psychedelic rock scene.

Rhett Miller will lend his talents to the Ardmore Music Hall on Friday. A dual threat as both a solo artist and the frontman of the Old 97’s, Miller’s latest album, “A Lifetime of Riding by Night,” reflects a stripped-down, introspective journey following his recent vocal surgery.

Fans of “apocolectric” folk-rock can celebrate with Bums in the Attic at the Dawson Street Pub on Friday as they unveil their new EP, “The Denouement.”

Local pop-punk legends The Starting Line, hailing from Bucks County, will perform at The Fillmore on both Friday and Saturday. Following a hiatus and a resurgence in popularity spurred by a mention in a recent Taylor Swift song, they will present their newest album “Eternal Youth,” their first release in 18 years.

Algernon Cadwallader will perform at Union Transfer on Saturday, marking a significant return after a decade since their last album, with the new material resonating well within the emo music landscape.

Saturday also brings Jon Langford and Sally Timms of the Mekons to Harmonie Hall in Manayunk, showcasing their project and its more than four-decade legacy in country-punk music.

Machine Gun Kelly, now simply known as MGK, will headline at the Xfinity Mobile Arena on Sunday as part of his “Lost Americana” tour. The rapper-singer has sought to redefine his identity, distancing himself from past associations with gun violence.

Closing out the week, Greg Mendez will take the stage at the First Unitarian Church on Monday, highlighting an intimate acoustic experience with fellow artists, culminating with the highly anticipated Jingle Ball at the Xfinity Mobile Arena featuring contemporary pop sensations.

These performances highlight the richness of Philadelphia’s music scene and its ability to support both emerging and established talent across various genres, embodying the city’s cultural spirit.
