Philly Students Establish Library with Strong Community Support.

At Kensington Health Sciences Academy (KHSA), the vision of a dedicated library that serves the student body has now become a reality. What began as a modest initiative—students pushing a single cart filled with books through the hallways—has evolved into a full-fledged library, aptly named the “DreamEscape Library.” This newly established space features vibrant decorations, shelves overflowing with diverse titles, comfortable seating, and computer access, providing a true sanctuary for learning and creativity.

The impetus for establishing the DreamEscape Library stemmed from a lack of resources; for many students, KHSA represented their first opportunity to experience a genuine library atmosphere. The transformation is significant, largely driven by student aspiration and community support. Two school years prior, the students were tasked with identifying a project that would make a positive impact on their school’s environment. The DreamEscape Library was born from that initiative, propelled by a ,000 seed grant.

With determination, students initially utilized the rolling cart to engage their peers in reading and library services. Their efforts bore fruit, fostering an enthusiastic culture around book borrowing, which culminated in the library’s expansion. This growth was marked by a grand opening event that showcased the library’s new, dedicated space and a budget for acquiring an even broader selection of books.

In Philadelphia, the need for comprehensive school library services is critical, especially considering that the Philadelphia School District employs only three full-time certified librarians across 216 schools—an alarming ratio that raises concerns among educational experts. The KHSA students recognized this gap and sought to address it through their initiative.

The expansion of the DreamEscape Library drew attention and support from the local community, including members of the Christos Mar Thoma Church in Northeast Philadelphia. Motivated by their desire to uplift the educational resources available to local students, the church contributed ,000 to the library and promised ongoing assistance. This partnership is rooted in a long history—Bobby Mathew, a church member, shared a transformative experience during his own education in Philadelphia and sought to give back by supporting local youth.

In recent months, the library has become a hub for reading and exploration, with an impressive statistic indicating that every ninth grader at KHSA currently has a book checked out. The library is operational three afternoons a week, with aspirations to extend its hours to accommodate every lunch period, thereby increasing accessibility for all students.
