Philly will experience a cold but less windy New Year as 2026 approaches.

As the Philadelphia region prepares to transition from 2025 to 2026, residents can expect significantly calmer weather conditions following a period of strong winds earlier in the week. New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day will feature temperatures lingering in the low to mid-30s, which is approximately 5 to 10 degrees below the seasonal average, according to Alex Staarmann, a meteorologist from the National Weather Service’s Mount Holly office. The combination of brisk winds and low temperatures will make the wind chill factor particularly noteworthy, with the perceived temperatures potentially dropping into the 20s.

The blustery conditions observed on Monday and Tuesday brought wind gusts exceeding 50 mph, culminating in a wind advisory that remained in effect until at least 4 p.m. on Tuesday. Particularly intense gusts were recorded at Philadelphia International Airport, where speeds reached up to 60 mph shortly after 8 p.m. on Monday evening. Fortunately, the forecast indicates a notable reduction in wind speeds, with Wednesday—New Year’s Eve—expected to see sustained winds of approximately 15 mph and gusts peaking around 25 mph. By Thursday—New Year’s Day—conditions will remain breezy, but gusts could increase to about 30 mph.

Despite the decreased wind intensity, a slight chance of snow flurries is possible on Thursday, with forecasters predicting a 40% likelihood of snowfall overnight. However, no significant accumulation is anticipated. There is also a minor chance of flurries early Wednesday, estimated at around 20%, but such occurrences are unlikely to bring any measurable snowfall.

Residents heading out to enjoy Philadelphia’s inaugural New Year’s Eve concert, scheduled for 8 p.m. on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, can expect cold but dry weather. The event will showcase performances by renowned artists including LL Cool J and local talents, providing an entertaining welcome to the new year. Participants in Thursday’s traditional Mummers Parade, which kicks off at 9 a.m. with over 10,000 performers, will encounter similarly brisk conditions without substantial weather disruptions.

As the first days of 2026 approach, the weather is predicted to remain relatively uneventful. However, the cold temperatures are likely to persist, with daily highs in the 30s and nighttime lows descending into the teens and 20s, thereby underscoring the need for appropriate winter attire during celebrations and outdoor activities.
