Placentia City Council candidates pledge to tackle budget issues and improve local roads.

Residents of Placentia will head to the polls this November to select representatives for two City Council positions, with the District 2 seat drawing three candidates and the District 4 seat featuring two contenders, including the incumbent. The race for District 2 follows the decision of Councilmember Kevin Kirwin to not seek reelection, ensuring a newcomer will join the council.

In the contest for District 2, candidates include Santosh Sabnis, a seasoned business owner and technology executive; Julie Suchard, a community volunteer with impactful local ties; and Matt Waugh, who serves as a client success executive. These candidates are expected to address key issues such as city revenues, transparency in governance, housing, and the financial health of Placentia.

The three candidates who aspire to represent District 2 present varied approaches to fiscal management and community development. Sabnis emphasizes the importance of economic growth prior to tax increases, advocating for a detailed review of city expenditures and the establishment of competitive bidding processes for city contracts. He argues that developments should consider local infrastructure and public service capabilities while maintaining accountability within the city budget.

Suchard identifies the city’s reliance on sales tax revenue as a critical challenge, given the relatively stable nature of property tax income. She notes that anticipated cuts to SNAP and Medicaid could reduce consumer spending, leading to a potential decrease in sales tax revenue. Suchard posits that effective oversight of city contracts and spending is essential to maintain financial stability.

Waugh brings a personal perspective to his candidacy, having deep roots in Placentia as a long-term resident and parent. He advocates for strategic growth that respects established neighborhood characters, emphasizing the need for housing developments to provide adequate parking and support local businesses.

In District 4, incumbent Chad Wanke seeks to secure a fifth term against challenger James Burandt, a management analyst with a background in public service. Wanke’s campaign highlights his accomplishments in public safety, infrastructure improvements, and fiscal management over his tenure. He aims to continue supporting essential services while addressing the city’s ongoing infrastructure needs.

Burandt proposes fresh perspectives on housing development, suggesting smaller lot sizes to foster the construction of starter homes. He also stresses the necessity of economic development to enhance city revenues without resorting to budget cuts.

As the election approaches, Placentia residents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the candidates’ positions on pressing local issues. The upcoming election will conclude on November 3, with ballots available for mail-in voting or deposit in designated drop boxes across the city.
