Police Arrest Suspect Two Years After 16-Year-Old’s Murder
In a recent development in the ongoing investigation into the fatal shooting of 16-year-old Nafis Betrand-Hill, Philadelphia law enforcement has apprehended a third suspect linked to the crime. Zaakir McClendon, 20, was taken into custody in Northeast Philadelphia and faces charges including murder and conspiracy related to the incident that occurred on April 13, 2023.
Betrand-Hill was shot and killed while socializing with friends near a preschool located at 23rd Street and West Montgomery Avenue. Investigators reported that an unidentified gray KIA approached the group shortly before 9 p.m., from which two armed men exited and opened fire. Betrand-Hill, a resident living just half a block from the scene, sustained multiple gunshot wounds that ultimately led to his death.
McClendon’s arrest marks the third charge in this high-profile case. Following the shooting, Ranief Allen, also 20, was arrested within weeks and has since been convicted of third-degree murder and related offenses. He is awaiting sentencing, which is scheduled for September. Aysir Clarke, known in the music world as Lil Bape, was also arrested in connection with the shooting but was acquitted after a trial in the spring.
Law enforcement officials theorize that the shooting could be connected to a continuing feud among youths in North Philadelphia, although details about specific motives remain unclear. Betrand-Hill’s family has expressed frustration over the investigation, stating that the trials have not elucidated a clear motive for their son’s tragic death, leaving them grappling with unanswered questions.
Betrand-Hill, affectionately known by his family as “Fisso” or “Bo,” was described as a creative individual with a passion for music. He attended Sayre High School and was actively pursuing a career in the barbering profession on weekends. His family shared deep feelings of loss, reflecting the ongoing grief and confusion they face in the aftermath of his murder. As they navigate their sorrow, they continue to honor his memory, frequently visiting his grave to pay their respects.
Law enforcement has not disclosed the details by which McClendon was connected to the crime. However, the initial affidavits indicate that police discovered the getaway vehicle used in the shooting a few hours post-incident. Investigators found the gray KIA—reported stolen from Drexel Hill a week prior—along with a Glock 27 handgun and various fingerprints inside the vehicle.
As this case continues to unfold, the public remains keenly aware of the pervasive violence impacting communities, amplifying calls for discussions on gun violence and safety among youth in Philadelphia and beyond.
