Police Chief: Investigation into deadly Largo crash to take several weeks.
A tragic accident in Largo has left three individuals dead, including two children, and has resulted in multiple injuries. Largo police officials have communicated that it may take over two weeks before authorities can determine fault in the incident that occurred on the weekend.
During a press conference held on Monday, Largo Police Chief Mike Loux shared updates on the ongoing investigation, while refraining from confirming whether excessive speed or seatbelt use were factors in the collision. Additionally, he did not provide information regarding potential criminal charges against the drivers involved.
The crash took place around 1:45 p.m. on Saturday at the intersection of Orangeview Drive and Ridge Road. According to police reports, 20-year-old Adarius Hayes was driving south in a Dodge Durango when he collided with the passenger side of a Kia Soul that was attempting a left turn.
The two young victims, identified as 10-year-old Jabari Elijah Solomon and 4-year-old Charlie Herbert Solomon Rivera, were ejected from the Kia during the impact. Their driver, 78-year-old Gail Price, was transported to the hospital but succumbed to her injuries shortly thereafter. A third passenger, 58-year-old Herbert Rivera, remained hospitalized on Monday with critical injuries.
Both Hayes and a passenger in his vehicle received treatment for injuries deemed non-life-threatening and were subsequently released from the hospital. A second passenger in the Durango fortunately escaped injury during the incident. Preliminary assessments suggested that neither Hayes nor the driver of the Kia appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash.
Loux emphasized the importance of completing a thorough investigation, stating that police are diligently collecting all facts and reconstructing the accident. This process will ultimately inform whether citations will be issued or criminal charges filed.
While it is anticipated that more clarity regarding the circumstances of the crash will emerge in the coming weeks, the tragic loss of the children has drawn attention and sorrow from the community. A memorial has been established near the crash site, adorned with toys, stuffed animals, and flowers, paying tribute to the young lives lost.
Adarius Hayes, a promising athlete, was a four-star recruit from Largo High School and had recently completed his freshman season with the Miami Hurricanes, where he participated in 12 games predominantly as a special teams player.
As investigations continue, the Largo police remain committed to uncovering the truth behind this devastating incident.
