Police officer and suspect injured in shooting incident in South Jersey.

A police officer and a suspect were injured during a shootout that occurred in Camden, New Jersey, on Tuesday evening, according to local authorities.

The identities of both the officer and the suspect have not been disclosed. Initial investigations indicate that the officer, a two-year veteran of the Camden County Police Department, was struck in his bulletproof vest, with evidence suggesting that the bullet may have ricocheted and caused injury to his arm. Reports from Philadelphia ABC affiliate WPVI indicate that despite the incident, the officer is currently in stable condition. In contrast, the condition of the suspect remains critical.

Details emerged that the officer sustained bruising on his chest from the impact of the bullet, indicating that the vest did provide some protection. However, it remains unclear whether the same bullet caused the injury to his arm. Camden County Police Chief Gabriel Rodriguez provided this information during an interview.

On the night of the incident, the police officers were conducting patrols in Camden, which is strategically positioned across the Delaware River from Philadelphia. They observed an individual engaged in what authorities classified as “suspicious activity.” During the confrontation, the suspect opened fire on one of the officers. In response, a second officer returned fire, striking the suspect.

Both the officer and the suspect were subsequently transported to the same medical facility for treatment, according to reports from the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The suspect has been charged with first-degree attempted murder along with multiple weapons-related offenses, as reported by NJ.com. The case is currently under the jurisdiction of the Camden County Prosecutor’s office, which noted that the suspect’s firearm was recovered at the scene of the shooting.

In accordance with New Jersey law, all incidents involving police discharge of firearms are subject to investigation by the state attorney general’s office, which is an established protocol designed to ensure transparency and accountability in law enforcement actions. As investigations continue, the local community remains on alert regarding ongoing safety issues and police presence in the area.
