Police search for suspect in Bronx killing of Ralph Herrera, known as ‘Chicken,’ described as an execution-style murder.
Police in the Bronx have released surveillance images of a young man believed to be involved in the execution-style murder of Ralph Herrera, a 33-year-old father of four, earlier this month. The authorities are investigating the incident that occurred on the evening of August 7, 2025, as part of a broader effort to address rising gun violence in the city.
The suspect, dressed in a black T-shirt with multicolored lettering, black pants, and distinctive black-and-red sneakers, approached Herrera and shot him in the left side of the head at point-blank range. Surveillance footage captured this unsettling act, which many in the community have described as brazen and terrifying. The gunman had a hood pulled tightly over his face at the time of the shooting, but investigators later identified him by his clothing when he was seen in the vicinity shortly after the crime.
Ralph Herrera, known to friends as “Chicken,” was standing outside Exotic World, the store where he was employed, located on Westchester Avenue near Morrison Avenue in Soundview, when he was ambushed. Following the shooting, emergency services rushed him to Jacobi Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries. The police recovered a single bullet casing at the scene, underscoring the violent nature of this crime.
Despite the circumstances of his death, friends have described Herrera as a good man and a devoted father. He reportedly had an extensive criminal history, with 27 arrests to his name, including one for possession of an illegal firearm. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, leading to community concern about local safety.
In the wake of Herrera’s death, dozens of vigil candles have been placed outside Exotic World, where friends and loved ones have gathered to share their memories and express their grief. They painted a picture of a man who was much more than his past mistakes, highlighting his contributions to the community and his involvement in music under the stage name Xhixken Dondada. Herrera even had experiences in the entertainment industry, meeting influential artists like Grammy-nominated rapper Nipsey Hussle.
As the investigation continues, police urge anyone with information about the suspect to contact NYPD Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS. All calls are confidential, and the police seek to bring justice to Herrera’s family and the community that mourns his loss. The tragic event has further fueled discussions about gun violence in urban areas and the urgent need for effective solutions to ensure public safety.
