Polish CEO apologizes for taking a hat from boy during U.S. Open event.
At the U.S. Open, a recent incident involving Polish CEO Piotr Szczerek has sparked considerable discussion and controversy. Szczerek, who is the head of a paving company, issued a public apology on Monday for his behavior during a match in which Polish tennis player Kamil Majchrzak was competing. The controversy arose when Szczerek, in a moment of poor judgment, grabbed a hat that was intended for a child, identified as Brock, after Majchrzak had tossed it into the stands.
The incident occurred on August 28 after the second-round victory of Majchrzak over Russian player Karen Khachanov. As Majchrzak celebrated his win, he threw his hat into the audience, which prompted simultaneous reactions from Szczerek and young Brock. According to accounts, Szczerek yanked the hat from the child’s hands and placed it into a bag, igniting a wave of backlash online.
In a subsequent Facebook post, Szczerek expressed remorse for his actions, describing them as a manifestation of “extremely poor judgment and hurtful actions.” He clarified that he never intended to deprive the young fan of a cherished souvenir, fully acknowledging the disappointment his actions caused both to Brock and the surrounding audience.
Following this incident, comments reportedly made by Szczerek gained traction, suggesting he told the boy, “If you were faster, you would have it” and even suggesting possible legal repercussions for the online backlash. In his Monday statement, Szczerek refuted any claims that he or his family had expressed any sentiments similar to those leaked online, asserting that all such statements were fabricated.
In a gesture of goodwill, Kamil Majchrzak later sought to address the situation, personally meeting with Brock to gift him a new hat. This meeting was documented on social media, bringing a more positive resolution to an otherwise controversial event. Following this match, Majchrzak faced Leandro Riedi of Switzerland in the third round, where he retired early after a grueling five-set bout.
This incident serves as a reminder of the heightened scrutiny and expectations placed on public figures, especially in high-stakes environments like professional sports.
