Poway Flower Show and Plant Sale Features ‘Reimagining Nature’s Symphony’ Theme

The Poway Valley Garden Club is set to host its 46th annual Flower Show and Plant Sale on Saturday, May 10, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This year, the event will take place at Old Poway Park, located at 14134 Midland Road, with a focus on fruit and vegetable plants, as well as potted plants that showcase stunning foliage. The Flower Show will be held in Templars Hall, while the accompanying Plant Sale will be situated at the park’s gazebo.

Organizers have declared this year’s theme as “Reimagining Nature’s Symphony,” indicating a renewed emphasis on horticulture rather than traditional floral arrangements. Barbara Spain, co-chair of the Flower Show, noted that the shift comes as the club seeks to redefine its mission and enhance its impact within the community. The decision to move away from a design category reflects a commitment to highlighting the fruits of local gardening efforts rather than purely aesthetic displays.

As part of the club’s reimagining efforts, members have also begun exploring outdoor field trips as a means of fostering camaraderie and community engagement. Furthermore, the introduction of an online volunteer sign-up system marks a significant modernization step, replacing traditional paper registrations. This initiative is part of a broader effort to adapt to contemporary practices while maintaining the club’s traditional values.

Both amateur and experienced gardeners are encouraged to participate in the Flower Show, which has eliminated entry fees, thus promoting inclusivity. Judging will be conducted by nationally accredited flower show judges, with prizes awarded across various categories, including first, second, and third places, as well as honorable mentions. Entries can be submitted on May 8 and 9 at the Porter House in Old Poway Park.

The adjacent Plant Sale will offer a diverse selection of plants, including starter varieties that are ready for transplanting. Alongside these, attendees will find dish gardens, elaborately painted birdhouses, gardening books, and related accessories, all available at affordable prices.

Additionally, educational displays will be present to inform visitors about local ecological initiatives, including the Kumeyaay-Ipai Interpretive Center and the Blue Sky Ecological Reserve. Local experts, such as San Diego Master Gardeners, will be available to provide insights and answer questions.

Members of the Poway Valley Garden Club hail from various North County regions, including Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Ramona, Carmel Mountain Ranch, Scripps Ranch, and surrounding communities. The club’s goals focus on encouraging gardening interests and enhancing community aesthetics, while also promoting educational outreach through a variety of programs and community service projects.

Proceeds from the Flower Show and Plant Sale will be directed towards supporting gardening-related projects in local schools and organizations. For additional information, including the online sign-up form for participants, visitors can explore the club’s website at PowayValleyGardenClub.org.
