A Michigan woman has been sentenced to a prison term of 30 to 60 years following a catastrophic drunk-driving incident that resulted in the deaths of two individuals and inflicted injuries on 14 members of the same family, including eight children. The verdict was delivered on Wednesday in a courtroom setting that reflected the gravity of the case.
Ashley Marie Monroe, aged 36, was reportedly pregnant with her fifth child at the time of the tragic accident, which occurred on May 18, 2024, at a family gathering in Wacousta Township, situated approximately 10 miles northwest of Lansing. According to prosecutors, Monroe was operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.195, exceeding Michigan’s legal limit of 0.08. Investigators revealed that she had also been under the influence of prescription medication during the incident.
Eyewitness testimonies disclosed that Monroe fled the scene following the crash, only to be intercepted by Clinton County sheriff’s deputies. Officers noted the strong odor of alcohol and her visibly bloodshot eyes upon their arrival. Additional evidence presented in court included an empty pint bottle of whiskey, alongside two pill bottles located in Monroe’s purse.
Earlier in 2024, she entered a no-contest plea on multiple charges, including second-degree murder. As part of her plea agreement, several other charges, which included fleeing the scene of the accident, were dismissed. The court proceedings culminated in Circuit Court Judge Cori Barkman imposing the lengthy prison sentence as a response to the severity of her actions and their far-reaching consequences.
In addition to the murder charge sentence, Monroe received an additional two to five years for each of the eight counts of driving while intoxicated causing serious injury. These sentences are set to be served concurrently, adding a layer of accountability to the overall ruling.
Monroe did not offer a statement during the hearing. However, her attorney, Edwar Zeineh, characterized her response in a sentencing memorandum, stating that she is “remorseful” and grappling with the aftermath of the tragedy she caused.
