Quakertown Police Chief, previously controversial, has resumed duties according to borough officials.

Quakertown Borough has announced the return of Scott McElree, a police chief who has recently been at the center of controversy following a violent encounter with high school students protesting against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). McElree has resumed his duties as Manager/Chief of Police after taking a leave of absence due to injuries sustained during the incident that occurred on February 20.

According to a statement from Peter Nelson, the borough’s solicitor, McElree will be working reduced hours while he continues to recover. Many in the community express dissatisfaction over his return, as evidenced by reactions during a recent council meeting where some attendees vocalized their opposition to his reinstatement, with one person stating that McElree was not welcome back.

The incident under scrutiny involved a chaotic confrontation where McElree briefly wrapped his arm around a teenage girl’s neck, prompting an investigation into his actions. A panel from the Police Chiefs’ Association of Bucks County subsequently concluded that McElree’s behavior was justified and fell within police policy guidelines. This review was initiated at the request of the borough itself.

In the wake of the altercation, five teenagers were charged with aggravated assault and related offenses. However, legal developments indicate that at least three of the felony charges against the juveniles have been withdrawn by Bucks County prosecutors, reflecting changes in the legal trajectory post-incident.

McElree, who is 72 years old, faced significant public backlash following the dissemination of video footage capturing the confrontation. Not only does he serve as police chief, but he also holds the position of borough manager, which further complicates the community’s response to his leadership.

As the borough navigates the ramifications of this incident, community members and officials will have to balance public sentiment with the legal assessments that shaped McElree’s return. Ongoing discussions about police practices and community-police relations are expected to continue as Quakertown reflects on the fallout from this high-profile situation.
