Quakertown Borough has announced the return of Scott McElree, a police chief who has recently been at the center of controversy following a violent encounter with high school students protesting against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). McElree has resumed his duties as Manager/Chief of Police after taking a leave of absence due to injuries sustained during the incident that occurred on February 20.
According to a statement from Peter Nelson, the borough’s solicitor, McElree will be working reduced hours while he continues to recover. Many in the community express dissatisfaction over his return, as evidenced by reactions during a recent council meeting where some attendees vocalized their opposition to his reinstatement, with one person stating that McElree was not welcome back.
