Queens bus network set for overhaul this summer, according to the MTA.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has announced significant changes to the bus network in Queens, set to take effect this summer. This comprehensive redesign aims to enhance public transit options for the borough’s approximately 800,000 bus riders. Under this initiative, Queens will boast a total of 124 bus routes, comprising 94 local and 30 express services, all intended to improve connections between bus riders and the broader transit system across New York City.

The MTA’s phased implementation will see the bulk of the new routes introduced on June 29, when 16 new routes will be launched, 67 existing routes will undergo modifications, and five routes will be discontinued. Further adjustments are scheduled for August 31, as one additional route will be introduced, 37 routes will be altered, and one route will be phased out. This systematic overhaul reflects the MTA’s commitment to enhancing transit efficiency and accessibility in one of the city’s most populous boroughs.

Janno Lieber, the Chair of the MTA, emphasized the importance of these changes for the residents of Queens, stating the authority’s responsibility to explore innovative methods to accelerate service for the community that relies heavily on public transportation. In preparation for the upcoming changes, transit officials have launched an interactive version of the new bus map to help riders navigate the adjustments and understand how their daily commutes may be affected.

The MTA plans to intensify outreach efforts as the implementation dates approach, aiming to keep the public informed about the upcoming changes. Demetrius Crichlow, President of New York City Transit, highlighted the need for effective communication, encouraging bus riders to utilize the available online resources to familiarize themselves with the new service patterns.

As the metropolitan area continues to adapt to the evolving needs of its residents, these changes to the bus routes in Queens represent an essential step in improving public transportation and ensuring connectivity throughout the city. The MTA remains committed to addressing the transportation challenges faced by Queens residents and fulfilling its mandate to provide efficient, reliable transit solutions.
