Queens man fatally shot outside bodega identified as devoted father with a prior criminal record.
A 27-year-old man fatally shot on a Queens street had lived a challenging life, yet was remembered by relatives as a devoted father who deeply cared for his two children. Oliver Nava was shot outside a bodega on 108th Street near Waldron Street in the Corona neighborhood of Queens around 8:35 p.m. last Thursday.
According to police reports, Nava had a lengthy criminal history, which included over 30 arrests and multiple offenses, including a gun-related charge. Despite these circumstances, family members emphasized that he maintained a clear distinction between his troubled past and his family life. A close relative noted that Nava often kept details of his life outside the home private, preferring to create joyful moments within his family.
Relatives described Nava as a humorous and engaging individual when he was with his family. They expressed their preference to focus on the positive aspects of his character, particularly his commitment to his five-year-old daughter and nine-year-old son. Nava often took his children to restaurants, amusement parks, and water parks—activities that reinforced his role as a dedicated father. Family members shared fond memories of their times together, emphasizing his love for simple pleasures such as sharing a pizza with his children.
Tragically, during the incident that claimed Nava’s life, another man was also injured. Sources indicate that the other victim, a 28-year-old male, was shot in the left leg and is currently in stable condition at Queens Hospital Center. However, this individual has reportedly not been cooperating with law enforcement in the ongoing investigation, which has seen little progress in identifying the shooter.
In the aftermath of the shooting, a makeshift memorial has been set up outside the deli where the tragic event occurred, adorned with candles, flowers, and a photograph of Nava. Friends and family expressed their concerns about safety in the neighborhood, reflecting on their hopes for improvement after previous incidents of violence.
To help support Nava’s children and cover funeral expenses, relatives have initiated two GoFundMe campaigns. Growing up in Jackson Heights, Nava’s story serves as a reminder of the complexities of life, where personal struggles can coexist with profound familial love.
