Queens man sentenced to 22 years in prison for strangling landlady over unpaid rent.
A man from Queens, identified as Davi Vidal, has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for the strangulation death of his landlord, 55-year-old Zoraida Leo. The sentencing was announced by the Queens District Attorney and took place in the Queens Supreme Court on December 8, 2023, presided over by Justice Ushir Pandit-Durant. Following his release, Vidal will also undergo five years of post-release supervision.
The tragic incident occurred just days before the sentencing, on December 4, 2023, during a heated dispute over unpaid rent between Vidal and Leo at her residence located on 96th Street near 32nd Avenue in East Elmhurst. Prosecutors revealed that the confrontation escalated to violence, with Vidal reportedly using both his hands and a cord from an iron to strangle Leo.
Leo’s lifeless body was discovered by her son the next day, prompting an investigation by law enforcement. Upon arriving at the scene, police found her near the entryway of the bathroom, where she had visible signs of trauma, including scratches on her face. Initially suspected to have been beaten, an autopsy conducted by the New York City medical examiner later confirmed that her death was a result of strangulation.
Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz expressed her condolences for Leo’s family, highlighting the senseless nature of the crime and emphasizing the need for justice. In her statement, Katz noted the brutality of the attack and the impact on the victim’s family, underscoring that no family should have to endure such a loss.
Vidal had reportedly resided in the attic of Leo’s building for approximately two years prior to the incident. Following the discovery of Leo’s body, authorities promptly identified and arrested him. During police questioning, Vidal admitted to the crime, revealing details about the struggle that ensued during the dispute. He expressed remorse, acknowledging his role in Leo’s death and indicating fear as a reason for his decision not to assist her after the altercation.
In January, Vidal pled guilty to manslaughter charges, resulting in the recent sentencing by the court. This case has shed light on the serious implications surrounding landlord-tenant conflicts, raising concerns about housing stability and the potential for tragic outcomes in financial disputes. The community has been left mourning the loss of Leo, remembered by those who knew her as a kind and welcoming individual.
