Residents of Athens suburb ordered to evacuate as wildfires rapidly expand across Greece.
A wildfire has ravaged a northern suburb of Athens, Greece, prompting the evacuation of local residents, according to officials from the country’s Fire Service. The town of Kryoneri, located approximately 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) northeast of the capital, received urgent communication from authorities advising citizens to seek safe areas as flames engulfed surrounding areas.
Fire Service spokesman Vassilis Vathrakoyannis reported the dispatch of three text messages to residents on Saturday, urging them to prioritize their safety. “There have been reports of damage. We will take stock when the fires have been put out,” he noted, indicating that assessments will follow once the immediate danger has been contained. Visual reports from various media outlets illustrate residential structures ablaze, underscoring the severity of the situation.
As firefighting efforts continue, Vathrakoyannis warned that “the real difficulties are ahead of us,” highlighting concerns about the prolonged state of dry weather and high temperatures. Greece has formally requested six firefighting planes from the European Union’s Civil Protection Mechanism to bolster its response efforts. Currently, a significant deployment of resources is in effect, including 145 firefighters, 44 fire engines, 10 firefighting planes, and seven helicopters battling the flames. At least five individuals, many of whom are elderly and facing respiratory issues, have received medical attention from ambulances on the scene.
Temperatures in the region are soaring, reaching or exceeding 38 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit), coupled with dry conditions and gusty winds that exacerbate the wildfire’s spread. Vathrakoyannis emphasized that under these persistent conditions, wildfires “expand very quickly and become dangerous,” presenting an urgent challenge for emergency services.
In addition to the fires in Kryoneri, emergency personnel are contending with three other significant wildfires on some of Greece’s largest islands, including Crete and Evia. Across the nation, 52 wildfires have ignited in just the past 24 hours, highlighting a troubling trend for Greece, where destructive wildfires have become increasingly common in recent years.
