Russia and North Korea Commence Construction of First Road Bridge Together
Russia and North Korea have embarked on an ambitious project with the construction of their first-ever road bridge over the Tumen River, a waterway that serves as the natural border between the two nations. During a recent video conference, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin emphasized the importance of the project, characterizing it as a pivotal development in Russian-Korean relations. Currently, there exists an older, Soviet-era rail bridge across the Tumen River, which has served the region for decades. The construction was marked by a ceremonial event, where attendees, including North Korean officials donned in formal attire, gathered to celebrate this milestone. According to Pak Thae-song, chairman of North Korea’s Supreme People’s Assembly, the bridge is envisioned to stand as “an eternal historical monument symbolising the unbreakable Korean-Russian friendly relations.” The governor of Russia’s Primorye region, Oleg Kozhemyako, expressed optimism that the bridge would enhance exchanges between the two countries, particularly benefiting sports and cultural interactions.
While both North Korea and Russia navigate a complex landscape marked by international sanctions, their alliance has strengthened amid ongoing geopolitical tensions, including Russia’s involvement in Ukraine. The strategic partnership established by Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leadership underscores a commitment to mutual support.
