San Diego Zoo Safari Park executive director to transition to Houston Zoo leadership role.
Lisa Peterson, who has been at the helm of the San Diego Zoo Safari Park since 2017, has announced her departure to accept the role of president and CEO at the Houston Zoo, effective in June. This transition is poised to take place following her final day at the Safari Park on April 25, 2025.
During her tenure at the 1,800-acre San Diego Zoo Safari Park, located in the picturesque San Pasqual Valley near Escondido, Peterson has played a crucial role as both senior vice president and executive director. Under her leadership, the park has become home to more than 3,000 animals, representing over 300 species, alongside an extensive accredited botanical garden. Her departure comes in the wake of another significant leadership change at the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, which oversees both the San Diego Zoo and the Safari Park. Paul Baribault recently stepped down from his position as CEO and president after nearly six years of service.
Before joining the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, previously known as San Diego Zoo Global, Peterson accrued 25 years of experience in the hospitality sector. Her background includes notable positions with Summerfield Hotel Company, which was later acquired by IHG, and roles as regional vice president at White Lodging. Additionally, Peterson has led various retail teams at Apple’s flagship store in San Francisco, underscoring her diverse leadership experience.
During her time at the Safari Park, Peterson oversaw significant developments, such as the launch of the Walkabout Australia habitat in 2018 and the ongoing creation of the Denny Sanford Elephant Valley habitat, slated for completion in 2026. Her compensation for 2023 was reported to be 1,018, as per data compiled by ProPublica.
The Safari Park has issued a statement praising Peterson’s contributions, highlighting her dedication to wildlife conservation and innovation, which have elevated the park to a globally recognized institution committed to connecting people with wildlife and emphasizing conservation.
In the interim, Vice President and Deputy Director Pat McTigue will step in as the acting executive director while a nationwide search is conducted for Peterson’s successor. Peterson has expressed enthusiasm for her new role in Houston, which attracts over two million visitors annually, capitalizing on her extensive experience to foster community engagement in wildlife preservation efforts.
Peterson’s recent appointment to the Board of Directors of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums further demonstrates her influential role within the industry, indicating a promising future as she embarks on this new chapter in her career. The Houston Zoo, with its rich heritage and significant visitor base, presents a robust platform for continued commitment to wildlife conservation.
