Predictions concerning the current season’s El Niño phenomenon have raised significant concerns within the Ecuadorian scientific community, particularly regarding its potential impact on the unique biodiversity of the Galápagos Islands. This archipelago, comprising over 230 islands, is recognized for its unparalleled concentration of endemic species, which are not found anywhere else on the planet.

El Niño is a periodic climatic event that manifests in the equatorial Pacific Ocean, characterized by elevated seawater temperatures and increased rainfall. The strength of El Niño is quantified by comparing current sea temperatures to historical averages; a deviation of 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) is categorized as “very strong.” Recent projections from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) suggest that sea temperatures could rise approximately 2.2 degrees Celsius (4 degrees Fahrenheit) above normal, prompting warnings from experts such as Franklin Ormaza, a researcher at the Higher Polytechnic School of the Coast (ESPOL), about significant ecological impacts.

The ramifications for local wildlife are expected to be profound. Rising water temperatures can result in the decline of plankton, algae, and smaller fish species that form the dietary foundation for larger marine animals. According to Washington Tapia, director of Biodiversa Ecuador, species such as Galápagos penguins, blue-footed boobies, flightless cormorants, tuna, and various sea lions face heightened risks. In the absence of viable food sources, many animal colonies may experience disruptions in their reproductive cycles, leading to declines in population and, potentially, starvation, as illustrated by scientist Gustavo Jiménez from the Charles Darwin Foundation. He noted that vertebrate populations in the region could diminish by as much as 20% this year if the phenomenon manifests with the anticipated intensity.

In addition to threatening animal populations, El Niño could also jeopardize the islands’ unique plant life. Heinke Jager from the Charles Darwin Foundation emphasized that the last remaining Scalesia forests may be at risk of extinction, alongside the endemic Opuntia cacti that support numerous ecosystems. Jager indicated that these native species require conservation efforts due to the anticipated influx of invasive plants spurred by heavy rains. Collaborative initiatives involving the Ecuadorian government, non-governmental organizations, and local foundations aim to tackle this issue through the removal of invasive species, seed collection, and the establishment of nurseries for the protection of threatened flora.

The Galápagos Islands, designated as a Natural World Heritage Site in 1978, are intrinsically linked to Charles Darwin’s formulation of evolutionary theory. The impending impact of a robust El Niño presents a critical challenge to preserving this distinctive ecological treasure, underscoring the urgent need for proactive conservation measures in light of changing climatic conditions.
