Second suspect arrested in Bronx mugging linked to victim’s fatal heart attack.
Police authorities have apprehended a second suspect in connection with the robbery of a Bronx man at knifepoint, an incident that ultimately led to the victim’s death several months later due to complications arising from a heart attack. The suspect, identified as Jose Guadalupe, 33, was arrested on Thursday and charged with murder for his involvement in the February 18, 2024, attack on 47-year-old Edgar Acevedo in the Fordham section of the Bronx.
Previously, police had charged another individual, Bryan Ciprian, 22, with murder in relation to Acevedo’s death. The robbery incident occurred around 1:45 a.m. when Acevedo and a 39-year-old friend were approached by the two assailants near the intersection of Grand Concourse and East Kingsbridge Road. During the encounter, the suspects brandished a knife, prompting the victims to attempt an escape.
Despite their efforts to flee, the muggers pursued Acevedo and his companion, eventually tripping Acevedo and forcibly taking his wallet, which contained 0. Following the robbery, Acevedo and his friend sought assistance from a nearby police officer on patrol and were subsequently taken to the 52nd Precinct station house. Less than an hour later, Acevedo suffered a heart attack while at the station.
Emergency responders performed chest compressions before transporting Acevedo to Montefiore Medical Center in critical condition. Unfortunately, Acevedo never recovered from the heart attack, which resulted in damage to his lungs, kidneys, and liver, leading to a lengthy hospitalization. Despite some initial improvements, including being removed from a respirator, complications, including an infection, necessitated the amputation of part of his left leg and the toes of his right foot.
On May 5, 2024, Acevedo succumbed to the effects of the heart attack linked to the robbery, an incident later classified as a homicide by the city medical examiner. Acevedo was a father of two, including an 11-year-old daughter.
Authorities used surveillance footage to identify the muggers, resulting in the arrest of Ciprian on August 7, 2024. At his arraignment, Ciprian was ordered held without bail and remains incarcerated at Rikers Island. His next court appearance is scheduled for September 26. Guadalupe, similarly charged, was also ordered held without bail following his arraignment earlier this week.
The tragic case highlights the severe consequences that violent crime can inflict on individuals and their families, drawing attention to ongoing discussions about public safety and criminal justice in urban environments.
