Security guard Aland Ettienne dies while attempting to stop elevators during Park Avenue mass shooting, according to NYPD.

In a tragic incident that unfolded in the lobby of a skyscraper on Park Avenue, Aland Etienne, a 46-year-old security guard, lost his life while attempting to save others during a mass shooting. According to NYPD officials, Etienne’s final moments were characterized by his courageous instinct to protect those around him. He reportedly made an attempt to access the elevators to prevent them from reaching the upper floors of the building, a move that would have potentially thwarted the gunman’s access to more victims.

Despite Etienne’s effort, the assailant, Shane Tamura, successfully made it to the 33rd floor where he tragically shot a woman after first killing Etienne, a police officer, and another woman in the lobby. Tamura ultimately turned the gun on himself, ending the violent spree he had inflicted on unsuspecting individuals.

The incident, which occurred on the evening of July 28, has prompted an ongoing investigation as authorities seek to piece together the circumstances surrounding this devastating act of violence. Deputy Mayor Kaz Daughtry emphasized that additional accounts of the harrowing events are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses, shedding light on the tragic episode.

Etienne’s selfless act of bravery has not gone unnoticed. Manny Pastreich, president of Local 32BJ of the Service Employees International Union, spoke of Etienne’s dedication, stating that he took his role as a security officer seriously, placing his life on the line each time he donned his uniform. Such contributions, though often overlooked, are essential to maintaining safety within communities. Pastreich memorialized Etienne as a hero whose legacy will be honored.

Tragically, Etienne’s death leaves behind a mourning family, including his girlfriend and their young son, who is set to celebrate his seventh birthday this Saturday. Additionally, Etienne is survived by five brothers and a sister, all of whom are grappling with the emotional toll of this heartbreaking loss. Gathmand Etienne, one of Aland’s brothers, expressed deep sorrow on social media, describing his brother as more than just family – a father, son, and a beacon of light in their lives torn apart by tragedy.

As the community reflects on this violent tragedy, the narrative surrounding Etienne and his final acts of bravery serves as a poignant reminder of the risks faced by those dedicated to ensuring the safety of others. The investigation into the shooting continues as authorities and community members alike seek answers and clarity in the aftermath of this shocking event.
