Selby Gardens features new display highlighting a lesser-known aspect of a Beatle’s life.

SARASOTA — An Exploration of George Harrison's Passion for Gardening at Selby Botanical Gardens

Visitors seeking a connection to one of the Beatles can immerse themselves in the life of George Harrison at the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in downtown Sarasota. The exhibit, titled “George Harrison: A Gardener’s Life,” runs through June 29 and celebrates Harrison’s lifelong passion for gardening, particularly his endeavors after the Beatles disbanded.

This unique exhibition offers an engaging walkthrough of Harrison’s experiences and inspirations, drawing heavily from the lush landscape of his English estate, Friar Park, located in Henley-on-Thames. Acquired in 1970 when he was just 27 years old, Harrison dedicated much of his post-Beatles life to revitalizing the property, which includes a Victorian mansion set within 32 acres of meticulously cultivated gardens. The joint efforts of Harrison and his wife, Olivia Harrison, transformed the once-neglected estate into a stunning sanctuary.

Olivia Harrison played a key role in the curation of the Selby Gardens’ exhibit, ensuring that the displays resonate with the essence of Friar Park. Visitors can explore 15 acres of vibrant horticultural vignettes that creatively reflect Harrison’s life and his musical legacy. One of the standout installations is a collection of white guitars elegantly suspended above a pond within the Tropical Conservatory, whimsically named the “Ye (Gently) Weeping Garden,” a homage to the Beatles’ catalog.

Throughout the gardens, patrons will find abundant references to Harrison’s life, whether through photographs or through thematic displays. The Ye Kolam Garden pays tribute to his appreciation for Indian culture, featuring colorful geometric patterns inspired by traditional kolams. Music fans will also enjoy signage that alludes to some of Harrison’s most beloved songs.

Further enhancing the personal narrative are excerpts from “Came the Lightening,” a collection of poems by Olivia Harrison dedicated to her late husband, which reflects on their shared life and love. Visitors can absorb these tender passages amid the serene beauty of the gardens, providing a profound experience that transcends the difference in climate from Florida to England.

Selby Gardens is currently undergoing significant renovations, having completed the first phase of a multiyear project that introduced a new parking garage, a restaurant named The Green Orchid, and a modern open-air welcome center. Plans for an additional phase, slated to begin construction at the end of this year and conclude by 2027, include a new conservatory complex and learning pavilion.

“George Harrison: A Gardener’s Life” invites fans and nature enthusiasts alike to celebrate the artistry and beauty that stemmed from Harrison’s dual passion for music and horticulture. For those interested in experiencing this fusion of nature and creativity, Selby Gardens is located at 1534 Mound Street, Sarasota. Admission details can be found on their official website at selby.org.
