Shooting death of Brooklyn ex-con on parole for killing two men raises concerns about possible gang involvement.

Investigators are probing whether a tragic shooting linked to an ongoing gang conflict in New York City took the life of a 34-year-old man from Brooklyn on June 29, 2025. Tahriq Thompson was fatally struck by a bullet while visiting friends near Riverdale Avenue and Osborn Street in the Brownsville neighborhood, mere months after being paroled for a double homicide committed during his teenage years.

At approximately 3 a.m., Thompson was shot in the arm, resulting in injuries that ultimately led to his death. His brother, Jammel Thompson, expressed his grief, stating that the family and community suffered a significant loss. Jammel, who recently ran for a City Council seat in Brooklyn District 41, described his brother as a dedicated individual who was striving to foster positive change in the community by starting a family real estate business and mentoring aspiring entrepreneurs.

Thompson had spent more than a decade in prison for the double murder of two men, Marvin Brown and David Harris, during an altercation at a barbecue on Chester Street in Brownsville in September 2009. After serving several years of a 25-year sentence for manslaughter, he was released on parole in April 2025. The shooting took place close to the location of his past crime, underscoring the challenges he faced while attempting to reintegrate into society.

Law enforcement officials believe that Thompson’s death is potentially associated with an ongoing feud involving the Folk Nation gang, which is active in Brownsville, and a rival gang based in Coney Island. Despite ongoing investigations, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.

In a poignant memorial service attended by around 50 people, family members and friends gathered to honor Thompson’s memory with candles. They spoke of his positive influence and aspirations to uplift the youth in the community. Jammel Thompson highlighted his brother’s efforts to encourage young individuals to succeed, stating that Tahriq’s ambitions significantly influenced his own decision to run for City Council.

Despite his troubled past, those who knew Thompson described him as a beacon of light during his incarceration, crediting him with helping fellow inmates pursue education and personal development. As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of a man who had shown promise and determination to redirect his life toward positive endeavors. Thompson’s shooting serves as a somber reminder of the ongoing struggles with violence and crime in New York City neighborhoods. Media News Source.
