In a gripping opening match at the US Open, former champion Coco Gauff narrowly advanced to the second round, overcoming Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia in a contest marked by numerous errors. The match, which lasted just under three hours, concluded with a score of 6-4, 6-7(2/7), 7-5.

Gauff, the third seed and reigning champion of the French Open, faced a challenging encounter on Tuesday. Despite her efforts, she was unable to find her rhythm, tallying a staggering 59 unforced errors along with 10 double faults, resulting in her serve being broken six times. Nonetheless, Gauff expressed relief at securing the victory, stating, “It was a tough match. Ajla was tough; she was getting so many balls back. It wasn’t the best but I’m happy to get through to the next round.”

In preparation for the US Open, Gauff made strategic changes to her coaching team, bringing on biomechanics specialist Gavin MacMillan to address her inconsistent service game. While she demonstrated moments of resilience, the 21-year-old acknowledges significant areas requiring improvement if she wishes to sustain a deep run in this iconic tournament.

Meanwhile, Ajla Tomljanovic also struggled, facing eight service breaks and contributing to the match’s high error count with 56 unforced errors. Gauff shared her insights on the mental toll leading up to the tournament, indicating, “Honestly, it’s been really tough, mentally exhausting. But I’m trying. It wasn’t the best today, but it was an improvement on last week [in Cincinnati]; I’m just trying to improve with each match.”

While Gauff had a challenging start, reigning Wimbledon champions Iga Swiatek and Jannik Sinner showcased excellent form as they progressed with commanding victories. World number one Sinner dominated Czech player Vit Kopriva, winning 6-1, 6-1, 6-2 in an impressive display that lasted less than an hour and forty minutes. Sinner, aiming for back-to-back US Open titles, acknowledged the significance of the tournament, remarking, “It feels great to be back here. Obviously it’s a very special tournament.”

Swiatek, competing next against Suzan Lamens from the Netherlands, also controlled her match, dispatching Colombia’s Emiliana Arango with a score of 6-1, 6-2. This victory made her the first woman to achieve 65 consecutive wins in the first round of WTA events, surpassing the previous record held by Monica Seles.

The tournament sees other established players like Naomi Osaka successfully return to form. Osaka, a former two-time champion, comfortably defeated Belgium’s Greet Minnen 6-3, 6-4, expressing her affinity for the familiar atmosphere of the venue.

As the tournament progresses, tennis enthusiasts look forward to witnessing further thrilling encounters and the potential for emerging talents to rise to the occasion, showcasing the depth of skill present in this prestigious event.
