Six confirmed dead and search for two missing individuals suspended after boat capsizes on Lake Tahoe.
A search operation was suspended on Sunday for two boaters who went missing after their vessel capsized in Lake Tahoe on Saturday afternoon, resulting in the tragic deaths of six others. The incident took place near California’s D.L. Bliss State Park, where emergency services were alerted around 3 p.m. to reports of a capsized boat carrying ten individuals.
The El Dorado County sheriff’s office and the U.S. Coast Guard responded promptly, mobilizing resources to rescue those stranded in the water. Two individuals were rescued and transported to a local hospital, while six deceased adults were recovered from the lake. The search for the two missing boaters was extensive, utilizing aerial assets, including a helicopter from the sheriff’s office and a Coast Guard plane that conducted a grid pattern search over the area.
The Coast Guard specified that the 27-foot gold Chris-Craft vessel capsized due to significant swells generated by winds of 30 knots, creating waves between six and eight feet high. Witnesses reported a sudden increase in wind strength, which complicates conditions, making smaller vessels particularly vulnerable to capsizing. On this day, the storm also damaged multiple other boats, leading to chaos as vessels collided with each other and with marina structures.
As search teams combed over a combined total of 390 square miles for approximately 12 hours, they worked collaboratively with several agencies, including a K-9 unit, California State Parks rangers, seasonal lifeguards, and crews from Coast Guard Station Lake Tahoe, alongside the C-27 Spartan aircrew from the Coast Guard Air Station in Sacramento.
The search was officially suspended at 10:55 a.m. on Sunday, pending further developments. The Coast Guard emphasized the difficulty in making this decision, with the organization extending their thoughts and prayers to the families affected by the capsize.
Authorities have chosen to withhold the names of the deceased and the missing individuals until their next of kin have been informed. The tragic event highlights the dangers posed by sudden weather changes on the lake and raises awareness about boating safety in challenging conditions.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of weather in the region and the critical importance of safety measures on the water. As investigations continue, it is expected that further updates will be provided as the community grapples with the losses incurred during this tragic event.
