Smoke from a fire on a NJ PATH train temporarily disrupts multiple commuter train lines.
A significant disruption occurred on Monday morning, August 4, 2025, when a fire erupted beneath an eastbound PATH train at Newport Station in New Jersey. The incident, which took place at approximately 6:19 a.m., resulted in the evacuation of passengers and the suspension of services on several PATH lines, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
The fire generated substantial smoke within the train, leading to the treatment of more than a dozen individuals for smoke inhalation. Reports indicate that thirteen individuals received medical attention, with nine of them being transported to a nearby hospital for further evaluation. Emergency response teams, including personnel from the Port Authority and the Jersey City Fire Department, were swiftly deployed to the scene to manage the situation.
In the wake of the fire, train services were significantly affected, with operations ceasing between Hoboken and the World Trade Center as well as between Journal Square and 33rd Street. However, the PATH lines connecting the World Trade Center to Newark, as well as from Hoboken to 33rd Street, remained operational. Despite these efforts, it took nearly two hours for service to begin resuming. The latest update around 8:37 a.m. indicated that some service had resumed between Hoboken and 33rd Street, although full service restoration was still underway.
Commuters faced substantial delays and confusion as New York City Emergency Management issued alerts regarding the transport disruptions. In an effort to assist those affected, NJ Transit cross-honored PATH tickets at key terminals including Hoboken, Newark, and New York’s Penn Station. Additionally, the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail permitted PATH ticket use at Newport, Exchange Place, and Hoboken stations. As many sought alternative routes, bus services and ferries also adapted their policies, with New York Waterway offering cross-honoring services at several major points.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with authorities working diligently to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. The Port Authority emphasized the commitment of PATH employees and first responders who managed the situation effectively amidst the chaos.
