Sony acquires majority stake in ‘Peanuts’ comic for 7 million from WildBrain.

Sony Group has taken a significant step in bolstering its presence in the entertainment industry by acquiring a 41% stake in the iconic comic strip franchise, Peanuts. The deal, announced recently, represents a substantial investment of 7 million and is part of Sony’s ongoing efforts to enhance its portfolio of beloved characters, including Charlie Brown and Snoopy. This acquisition comes from Canada’s WildBrain, a notable player in children’s entertainment.

With this latest purchase, Sony’s total ownership of Peanuts Holdings LLC has increased from 39% to 80%, solidifying its majority stake in the brand. The remaining 20% will continue to be held by the Schulz family, the heirs of Charles M. Schulz, the original creator of the comic strip. The transaction reflects Sony’s strategy to leverage its vast global network and expertise to elevate the value of the iconic brand further, as articulated by Shunsuke Muramatsu, President of Sony Music Entertainment.

Peanuts made its first appearance on October 2, 1950, featuring Charlie Brown and his companions, such as Linus, Lucy, and the playful beagle Snoopy, in a mere seven newspapers. Over the decades, the comic strip expanded its reach, eventually being published in more than 2,600 newspapers worldwide, delighting millions of readers across 75 countries. The strip is widely recognized for its memorable imagery and phrases, some of which, like “good grief” and “happiness is a warm puppy,” have become ingrained in popular culture.

Sony’s involvement with the Peanuts franchise began in 2018 when it acquired its initial stake from WildBrain. The recent agreement to purchase the remaining stake was finalized through an official business arrangement valued at 630 million Canadian dollars. The rights and management of the Peanuts brand are handled by a dedicated subsidiary of Peanuts Holdings, ensuring that the comic strip continues to thrive in a competitive entertainment landscape.

WildBrain, known for its diverse range of kids’ entertainment assets, including franchises like Strawberry Shortcake and Teletubbies, has played a significant role in maintaining the legacy of Peanuts. With Sony now poised to take a leading role in its evolution, the future of this cherished franchise looks promising, as it prepares to reach new audiences while honoring its storied past.
