SpaceXAI to testify before NYC Council following subpoena issued to Elon Musk’s company.

Elon Musk’s company, SpaceXAI, is set to testify at a City Council hearing focused on artificial intelligence this Friday. This development comes in light of the company’s recent subpoena issued by the legislative body, underscoring the Council’s commitment to addressing the potential implications of AI technology.

The City Council has previously sought to engage with the AI sector during an extensive nearly ten-hour hearing attended by representatives from major companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Meta. Council members interrogated these leaders on the concerning advancements in AI, yet the session yielded limited concrete responses, particularly regarding the quantification of risks related to worst-case scenarios.

Council Speaker Julie Menin criticized SpaceXAI’s failure to attend the earlier hearing as “unacceptable.” According to the Council’s statement, legal communications were made to SpaceXAI indicating that a state judge would be petitioned to compel the company to present evidence if it did not voluntarily agree to testify.

Menin emphasized the necessity for transparency, stating that New Yorkers, along with the broader public, deserve to hear directly from those developing influential technologies. She highlighted the importance of knowing the safeguards these companies plan to implement to protect citizens from potential harm and insisted on accountability measures when these protections fall short. Menin expressed satisfaction in securing SpaceXAI’s commitment to participate in the upcoming testimony.

The forthcoming hearing will be conducted by the Technology Committee of the City Council, and it is expected to attract considerable attention. Notably, Jess Asato, a member of Parliament in the United Kingdom, traveled to New York to testify against SpaceXAI during last week’s proceedings. Asato has initiated legal action in the UK against the company concerning the creation of inappropriate images using its AI chatbot tool, Grok. She remarked on the need for AI safety and labeled the absence of the company at the previous hearing a significant disappointment.

Concerns voiced during the Council sessions included alarming predictions from whistleblowers regarding the unchecked progression of AI technology. Jacob Coxon, a former researcher at Anthropic, warned of dire possibilities, suggesting that if current trends persist, humanity risks losing control over advanced AI systems, potentially leading to catastrophic outcomes.

The City Council is contemplating ten legislative proposals aimed at regulating the burgeoning AI industry, recognizing the urgent need for oversight in a field that is rapidly evolving. As discussions intensify, the implications of these technologies on society and governance remain a critical area of focus.
