Spike Lee and Denzel Washington’s fifth collaboration to debut at Cannes Film Festival.
Spike Lee has officially announced that his upcoming feature film, “Highest 2 Lowest,” will premiere out of competition at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. This marks Lee’s fifth collaboration with renowned actor Denzel Washington. The announcement was made on social media, where Lee shared a photograph featuring a fabric patch referencing the film and its Cannes debut, which is scheduled for May 19, 2025.
The Cannes Film Festival, a significant event in the global cinematic calendar, will run from May 13 to May 24 this year. Lee’s post included a lighthearted greeting, expressing excitement for the project, which signifies the enduring bond between the filmmaker and the acclaimed actor. Cannes organizers confirmed the film’s participation, emphasizing that its announcement had been delayed due to awaiting confirmation of Washington’s attendance.
“Highest 2 Lowest” is a reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 crime thriller “High and Low,” which centers around the harrowing narrative of a shoe company executive who becomes embroiled in an extortion scheme following a botched kidnapping. Lee has described Washington’s character as a music mogul with a reputation for having the best ears in the business, indicating a modern twist on the original story.
This latest project reunites Lee and Washington after nearly two decades since they last collaborated on the 2006 film “Inside Man.” The pair first joined forces on the 1990 film “Mo’ Better Blues,” followed by the critically acclaimed “Malcolm X” in 1992, which garnered two Academy Award nominations, including one for Washington’s Best Actor performance. Their collaboration continued with the 1998 release of “He Got Game.”
“Highest 2 Lowest” features an impressive ensemble cast, including Jeffrey Wright, Dean Winters, and A$AP Rocky, promising a distinctive narrative that fuses Lee’s innovative storytelling with Washington’s captivating screen presence. As anticipation builds for the film’s debut, stakeholders in the industry and audiences alike are curious about how this new interpretation will resonate within the broader cinematic landscape. With its prestigious Cannes debut, the film is poised to make a significant impact in the art of storytelling, while continuing the legacy of two influential figures in cinema.
