Suburban Community Hospital in East Norriton, Pennsylvania, is poised to undergo a significant transformation as it prepares to transition into a 15-bed behavioral health center, operating under the license of its sister institution, Roxborough Memorial Hospital. This change will take effect on July 1, reflecting a broader trend within the healthcare system as facilities adapt to evolving community needs.

The decision to convert the hospital arises amid a backdrop of ongoing staffing challenges and dwindling patient numbers. For much of the past year, Suburban faced difficulties in maintaining adequate staff levels, leading to delayed patient care. In 2023, the facility averaged just 23 patients per day, far below its licensed capacity of 126 beds. These challenges prompted the Prime Healthcare Foundation, the owner of Suburban, to initiate the transition toward a micro-hospital model last summer, which allowed for an emergency department but did not include operating rooms or intensive care services.

The transition to a behavioral health center is not a consequence of the safety issues identified by state inspectors. Rather, Prime Healthcare claims that this strategic shift intends to address the unmet mental health needs within the community. A spokesperson articulated the foundation’s belief that the new focus will enhance the quality of care and provide a supportive environment tailored to the specific needs of the patient population.

However, inspection reports from the Pennsylvania Department of Health have highlighted several concerns regarding patient care at Suburban. The facility was cited three times for insufficient staffing in 2023, beginning with an incident where a patient reportedly waited over seven hours for a CT scan due to a lack of specialized staff. Further inspections revealed ongoing staffing inadequacies in the operating rooms, with numerous days cited for insufficient on-call personnel.

Beginning in July, the rebranded Suburban Behavioral Health Campus will primarily serve patients aged 55 and older, with approximately 37 full-time staff members remaining at the site. Additionally, 89 full-time employees have been offered positions at other Prime Healthcare facilities, including Roxborough Memorial and Lower Bucks Hospital. Following the transition, Jefferson Einstein Montgomery Hospital will be the closest emergency department, located two miles from the reconfigured Suburban facility.
