Suspect Arrested in Connection with 1973 Murder of 21-Year-Old Woman in Connecticut

Authorities announced on Thursday the arrest of a suspect in connection with the murder of Janet Couture, a 21-year-old woman who was brutally stabbed in her East Hartford home on October 13, 1973. George Legere, now 77 years old, was initially identified as a person of interest shortly after the crime but lacked sufficient evidence for an arrest at that time. The case remained unresolved until a pivotal breakthrough occurred in 2021, when Legere was apprehended by Avon police for an unrelated kidnapping and sexual assault case from 1984. In that instance, he was incarcerated in Massachusetts in 2019, at which time his DNA was collected.
