A 57-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the shooting death of Marcin Iwanowicz, a 46-year-old Brooklyn resident, outside a methadone clinic on Christmas Eve. Shamar Williams is facing multiple charges, including murder, robbery, and criminal possession of a weapon. Police announced his arrest on Wednesday, and he is expected to face arraignment in Brooklyn Criminal Court in the coming days.

The incident occurred around 9:48 p.m. near the intersection of Belmont Avenue and Junius Street in Brownsville, where Iwanowicz was receiving treatment. Authorities report that he was shot once in the chest and subsequently transported to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Iwanowicz’s father, Stanislaw Iwanowicz, expressed deep sorrow over his son’s death, articulating a pervasive sense of loss. He noted the significant emotional toll the incident has taken on him, stating that he feels incomplete following his son’s tragic passing. Stanislaw lamented the circumstances surrounding his son’s death, which he described as a harrowing experience that has left him unable to find solace.

Williams, who resides less than half a mile from the shooting scene, has a lengthy criminal history dating back to 1987, including twelve prior arrests for various offenses such as robbery and criminal possession of a loaded firearm. Detectives have informed the victim’s family that they are actively pursuing additional suspects in the case.

There are indications that the confrontation may have been related to a robbery. Surveillance footage captured the moments leading up to the shooting, with reports suggesting that Iwanowicz had been engaged in an argument with his attackers prior to the incident. Following the shooting, he was found without his wallet, which contained personal items and approximately 0 intended for Christmas groceries, according to his father.

Tragically, Marcin Iwanowicz’s death marks the second significant loss for the family within a decade, as his mother was killed in a hit-and-run accident in 2016. Stanislaw, already grappling with the loss of his wife, faced further difficulties during the COVID-19 pandemic, losing his job and suffering a debilitating aneurysm that has left him disabled.
