Suspect arrested in murder of elderly Queens couple after tracking stolen credit card activity in Manhattan.

A sex offender on parole has been apprehended in connection with a horrific double murder and arson committed in Queens, New York. Jamel McGriff, 42, was arrested following an extensive manhunt that was initiated after the tragic death of an elderly couple in their home.

Police officials have revealed that McGriff was captured around 5:40 p.m. near the intersection of Seventh Avenue and West 44th Street in Midtown Manhattan. New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced his arrest, commending the officers whose keen observations led to the capture of a suspect described as dangerous and violent. Police had been actively tracking McGriff’s credit card transactions, which included a purchase made at a Regal movie theater in Union Square using one of the victims’ credit cards.

The incident unfolded on September 8, when Frank and Maureen Olton, aged 76 and 77 respectively, were found dead in their Bellerose home on 254th Street near 87th Drive. Commission Tisch disclosed that video surveillance showed McGriff attempting to gain entry into other homes on the block before successfully accessing the Olton residence under the pretense of needing to charge his cell phone. After gaining access, he interacted with Frank Olton, who permitted him into the backyard. It was reported that the suspect remained in the home for approximately five hours, during which he is alleged to have committed heinous acts against the couple.

Emergency responders discovered Frank Olton tied to a pole in the basement, his body bearing multiple stab wounds. His wife, Maureen, was found deceased on the living room floor. The manner of her death has not been confirmed, but law enforcement has stated that McGriff left the premises after stealing two cell phones and setting the house ablaze.

Authorities have also released video footage showing McGriff walking away from the scene and later selling the stolen cell phones at a pawn shop in the Fordham section of the Bronx. Residents of a local shelter reportedly recognized him from police released photographs, recounting previous interactions that raised concerns regarding his possession of lighters.

McGriff’s criminal history is extensive, with 19 arrests to his name, including nine felonies. He had been conditionally released on parole in April 2023 after serving time for a range of serious offenses, including robbery and attempted assault. In light of his recent activities, police confirm he is also a suspect in additional robbery incidents within Manhattan.

As the investigation continues, the NYPD is working diligently to ensure justice for the victims while addressing the broader implications of parolee monitoring and public safety.
