Suspect Charged Nearly 15 Years After 80-Year-Old Anaheim Man’s Death

In December 2011, the community of Anaheim was shaken by the discovery of the body of 80-year-old Il Jae Kim, found deceased in his apartment. Nearly 15 years later, law enforcement officials have apprehended a suspect in connection with this long-unsolved case. Mike Nunez, a 34-year-old resident of Santa Ana, has been charged with murder and an additional enhancement for allegedly using a deadly weapon in the commission of the crime, as confirmed by the District Attorney’s office.

Details surrounding the case reveal that Kim was discovered in his apartment located at 225 S. Western Ave. on December 15, 2011. Family members had expressed concerns for Kim’s well-being, prompting authorities to perform a welfare check. Upon entering the apartment, Anaheim police found Kim’s lifeless body, sparking an urgent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

In the years following the initial investigation, Anaheim detectives collected evidence and pursued numerous leads; however, the case eventually went cold due to a lack of substantial breakthroughs. Despite the challenges, detectives resumed their efforts in March 2026. This renewed investigation was bolstered by advancements in forensic technology, particularly through the cooperation of the Orange County Crime Lab, an entity that collaborates with various law enforcement agencies throughout the region.

Utilizing innovative forensic DNA techniques, investigators meticulously reexamined the previously collected evidence. This rigorous review ultimately led to the identification of Nunez as the primary suspect in Kim’s murder. As the investigation progresses, specific details regarding the evidence that precipitated this breakthrough remain undisclosed, according to Anaheim police Sergeant Eric Anderson.

Nunez was taken into custody on October 6 in Santa Ana and is currently being held at the Orange County Jail, with bail set at million. His initial court appearance is scheduled for October 29, providing a key moment for the continuation of this long-awaited legal process. This arrest not only reignites attention to an unresolved homicide but also emphasizes the power of modern forensic science in solving cold cases that may once have seemed hopelessly stagnant. The investigation is ongoing, and further developments are anticipated as authorities work to bring closure to this troubling chapter.
