Taxi driver attacks dispatcher with an axe in Long Island, narrowly avoiding a fatal incident, according to police reports.

Authorities in Long Beach are investigating a violent incident involving a former taxi driver who allegedly attacked a dispatcher with an ax, leaving the victim with life-threatening injuries. The incident occurred on February 13, and the perpetrator, identified as 34-year-old Anthony Calvo, has since been charged with attempted murder and assault, according to a press release from the Nassau County District Attorney’s office.

The victim, a 60-year-old man whose name has not been disclosed, was employed as a dispatcher for Long Beach Taxi, where Calvo also worked as a driver until 2022. Authorities reported that the confrontation stemmed from a past workplace disagreement between the two men. District Attorney Anne Donnelly characterized the incident as a horrific and unprovoked attack that has left the victim clinging to life with catastrophic injuries.

Investigators revealed that Calvo spotted the dispatcher walking home around 6 a.m. after completing an overnight shift. In a sudden and violent encounter, Calvo allegedly approached the victim from behind and struck him at least three times with the ax, targeting his face, head, and arm. Following the attack, the dispatcher managed to reach his home, where he summoned emergency assistance.

The victim has undergone multiple surgeries due to severe injuries sustained in the assault and continues to face a significant risk of death, according to the district attorney’s office. The severity of the injuries underscores the brutality of the attack and the need for swift legal action.

Initially, Calvo was not detained immediately following the incident. However, law enforcement officials were able to identify him as a suspect, resulting in his arrest on March 12. Donnelly emphasized that this brutal, senseless attack would be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, reaffirming the office’s commitment to seeking justice for the victim.

As the case moves forward, it highlights serious issues surrounding workplace violence and the potential consequences of unresolved conflicts. The Long Beach community is closely monitoring the developments in this case, reflecting broader concerns about safety and accountability in professional environments.
