Taxi driver critically injured after experiencing a medical episode that caused a crash near the Chinese Consulate.

A taxi driver remains in critical condition following a serious accident in Manhattan that occurred on Thursday afternoon. The incident, which took place near the Chinese Consulate, resulted in several injuries and has raised concerns about public safety in the bustling area.

According to law enforcement sources, the taxi driver, who has not been identified, lost control of his yellow cab while traveling westbound on West 42nd Street. At approximately 2:27 p.m., the driver mounted the curb before colliding forcefully with a light pole at the intersection of 12th Avenue. The impact left the driver severely injured, necessitating immediate medical attention.

Two passengers, a 61-year-old man and a 54-year-old woman, were in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Fortunately, they sustained minor injuries. A 33-year-old male pedestrian was also injured in the incident, highlighting the broader implications of this traffic accident.

Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and transported the cab driver, the two passengers, and the injured pedestrian to Bellevue Hospital for treatment. According to police reports, a passerby, a Queens man who was working at the nearby Javits Center for Comic Con, witnessed the accident. He described the scene as chaotic, stating that the cab was still smoking and that he assisted in extracting the passengers from the vehicle. One of the passengers suffered a significant gash on their face, while the cab driver was found in a dire state, with head injuries reportedly caused by the impact of the steering wheel.

An MTA bus driver on the scene noted that rescuers had to deploy the Jaws of Life, a hydraulic rescue tool, to extricate one of the injured from the cab. This detail underscores the severity of the situation as emergency services worked to ensure the safety of those affected.

The crash occurred just steps away from the southwest corner of the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in New York City, a location that has previously been a focus of attention due to espionage allegations. In 2020, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo labeled the consulate a “spy hub,” following the arrest of an NYPD officer for espionage.

While the ongoing investigation aims to clarify the circumstances surrounding the crash, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential for tragic outcomes in busy urban environments. As authorities continue to piece together the events leading up to the accident, community members are urged to remain vigilant regarding traffic safety.
