Teen receives sentence for fatal shooting of immigrant at Bronx subway platform.

A 16-year-old individual has received a sentence of 12 years to life in prison for the murder of a Mexican immigrant, Obed Beltrán-Sánchez, on a Bronx subway platform. The defendant was also sentenced to an additional one to three years for attempted murder, with both sentences to be served concurrently. The ruling was handed down by Bronx Supreme Court Justice Gayle Roberts following the teen’s guilty plea to both charges on October 20, 2025.

The fatal incident occurred on February 12, 2024, at approximately 4:35 p.m. at the Mount Eden subway station. During a shootout involving rival gangs, the then-14-year-old defendant opened fire, resulting in a stray bullet striking Beltrán-Sánchez, 35, in the torso, ultimately leading to his death. Apart from the fatality, the shooting injured four other bystanders, including a 14-year-old girl who sustained a foot injury, a 28-year-old man shot in the arm, a 71-year-old man shot in the hand, and a 28-year-old woman shot in the face, who required multiple reconstructive surgeries. During the chaos, the defendant himself was injured, suffering wounds to his left thigh and ear.

Earlier in January 2024, the defendant was linked to another shooting incident in Morris Heights, where he shot a 17-year-old boy in the leg during a confrontation with a group of rival teenagers.

Beltrán-Sánchez emigrated from Mexico, where he left behind his wife, two young children aged 12 and 7, as well as his parents. He had ambitions to return to his home country after working in construction in New York City. A friend in Mexico described him as a dedicated individual who worked tirelessly to support his family, aspiring to complete building his house and eventually return to Tehuacán, his hometown.

The impact of this tragic event has reverberated through many communities, underscoring the broader issues of gun violence and the struggles faced by immigrants. The case took another turn as another suspect, Langel Jones, has been arrested in connection with the shooting, facing charges that include murder, assault, and reckless endangerment, with his court appearance scheduled shortly.

This incident emphasizes the ongoing challenges of maintaining safety in urban environments and the devastating consequences of gang-related violence. As this case unfolds, it remains a poignant reminder of the complexities surrounding crime, community safety, and the lives affected by such tragedies.
