Tenant shoots superintendent dead and injures two others during backyard dispute.

A tragic incident unfolded in the Bronx on Wednesday morning, resulting in the death of a building superintendent and injuries to two others in a shooting linked to an ongoing dispute over residential amenities. The event, which occurred around 8:30 a.m. in an apartment building located on College Avenue near East 170th Street, has heightened concerns about safety in the area.

The shooter allegedly targeted the 37-year-old superintendent as well as a 62-year-old tenant, identified by relatives as Orlando Nieves. Eyewitness accounts revealed that they were passing by the suspect’s first-floor apartment when the shooting commenced. The superintendent sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the chest, while Nieves was injured in the arm and subsequently shot in the side of the chest.

Upon realizing the severity of the situation, Nieves’ spouse, who requested to be identified only as Ebony, expressed her distress over the dual injuries sustained by her husband. She described how Nieves had attempted to duck for cover when he was shot, indicating the chaotic nature of the incident. Reports suggest that after shooting the superintendent, the suspect continued his assault outdoors, hitting a 59-year-old man in the buttocks. This victim is believed to be homeless, and although he was injured, he is currently expected to recover.

Following the shooting, the alleged perpetrator barricaded himself inside his apartment. In a concerning twist, he reportedly contacted a local television news outlet to express his grievances, stating that he felt threatened by his neighbors. As police arrived on the scene, the suspect indicated he would only surrender after a camera crew was present, leading station personnel to alert law enforcement for his apprehension.

Authorities later revealed that the suspect had an extensive history of conflicts with both tenants and landlords in the Bronx, including a previous complaint regarding a malfunctioning refrigerator. Friends of the suspect have mentioned mental health issues, suggesting that bipolar disorder may have played a role in his behavior.

The shooting marks a grim chapter in the ongoing battle against gun violence in New York City, particularly highlighted by a series of incidents in the Bronx, which has seen multiple shootings in recent days. In response to the escalating situation, Mayor Adams announced the activation of a “full mobilization plan” aimed at addressing the surge in violence throughout the borough.

As the investigation progresses, the community remains in shock over the occurrence of this violence, reflecting the broader societal concerns surrounding gun safety and mental health. The identities of the deceased and the injured have not been fully disclosed, as authorities continue to gather information and assess the implications of this tragic event.
