The cartel leaders implicated in the case include Juan Jose Farias Alvarez, also known as “El Abuelo,” Alfonso Fernandez Magallon (“Poncho”), Luis Enrique Barragan Chavez (“Wicho”), Edgar Orozco Cabadas (“El Kamoni”), and Nicolas Sierra Santana (“El Gordo”). The group is accused of orchestrating a long-term conspiracy to import large quantities of drugs, including methamphetamine, cocaine, and fentanyl, into the United States.
Alvarez is identified as the leader of the United Cartels, which has established significant authority in Michoacan, a region known for its drug production and trafficking activities. The probe began when two low-level dealers crashed their car and attempted to discard a stash of methamphetamine. Following their arrest, investigators linked these individuals to Eladio Mendoza, a cartel figure operating from Atlanta. Mendoza reportedly maintained consistent communication with those high up the United Cartels hierarchy.
In a subsequent search of one of Mendoza’s properties in 2020, federal agents seized a staggering 850 kilograms of meth, marking a significant blow to the cartel’s operations. However, Mendoza’s fate took a dark turn; it is alleged that he was killed in Mexico following orders from cartel leadership in retaliation for the loss of the seized drugs.
