The 34th Philadelphia Film Festival features films from Bradley Cooper and Guillermo del Toro in its lineup.

The Philadelphia Film Festival is set to return from October 16 to October 26, showcasing an impressive lineup of films that emphasize both cinematic excellence and diverse storytelling. This year’s festival promises a multitude of events, including blockbuster premieres, filmmaker meet-and-greet opportunities, community screenings, insider Q&A sessions, and glamorous red carpet events. The festival will be held at all Philadelphia Film Society (PFS) venues, including the recently renovated Philadelphia Film Center, which boasts a new box office, main entrance, upgraded concessions, and an expanded lobby space.

Opening night features the much-anticipated release of the third installment in Rian Johnson’s acclaimed whodunit series, titled “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.” This film includes a distinguished cast featuring Daniel Craig, Josh O’Connor, and Glenn Close. The festival will culminate with the family drama “Sentimental Value,” directed by renowned filmmaker Joachim Trier, which is expected to draw considerable interest.

Among the showcase of films, notable “centerpiece” screenings will include standout titles such as Yorgos Lanthimos’s “Bugonia,” Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of “Frankenstein,” Chloé Zhao’s “Hamnet,” and Bradley Cooper’s “Is This Thing On?” The festival is also committed to highlighting international cinema with films like “The Good Sister,” directed by German filmmaker Sarah Miro Fischer, “Kika” by Alexe Poukine from France, and “Silent Friend,” directed by Hungarian filmmaker Ildikó Enyedi.

Local filmmakers will play a crucial role, with works showcased by Philadelphia-born or based directors including Mike Macera, Ian Kimble, Kevin Shreck, Sarah McClure, Matt Wilkins, and Eliza Fox. The festival will also feature special screenings of two much-anticipated projects: the finale of HBO’s Delco-centered miniseries “Task,” as well as Amazon Prime’s docuseries “Allen Iv3rson.”

As expressed by Michael Lerman, the artistic director and senior director of programming at PFS, this year’s lineup represents a diverse blend of prominent premieres, bold international films, and innovative works reflective of a vibrant film community. The festival aims to adapt to the evolving tastes of its audience, offering a comprehensive survey of the industry’s finest offerings in 2023.

Tickets for the festival will be available for purchase starting October 3 for PFS members and October 6 for the general public. They can be obtained through the festival’s official website. In-person ticket purchases will also be available at various PFS box office locations throughout the festival period.
