The Free Library expands Saturday hours at seven additional branches.
In a move aimed at enhancing community accessibility, the Free Library of Philadelphia has announced the expansion of its Saturday hours to an additional seven branches throughout the city. This initiative will bring the total number of branches operating on weekends to 39, significantly increasing access to library resources and services for residents.
Libraries serve as essential hubs within their communities, offering a variety of resources, including books, technology, and educational programs. Kelly Richards, president and director of the Free Library of Philadelphia, underscored the importance of libraries in providing access to information and technology. By extending weekend hours, the library seeks to ensure that more residents can utilize its facilities when they need them most.
The new Saturday schedule, which allows branches to remain open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., has already been implemented in several locations, with two more branches set to follow suit in the coming weeks. The branches that have commenced their Saturday operations include:
– Bustleton Library, located at 10199 Bustleton Ave.
– Frankford Library, situated at 4634 Frankford Ave.
– Haddington Library, positioned at 446 N. 65th St.
– Lawncrest Library, based at 6098 Rising Sun Ave.
– Roxborough Library, found at 6245 Ridge Ave.
In addition to these, the Cecil B. Moore Library at 2320 Cecil B. Moore Ave. will begin its Saturday hours this week, while Chestnut Hill Library at 8711 Germantown Ave. is set to follow on October 18.
The initiative to restore weekend hours, which were suspended during the pandemic, has been a key objective for Richards since assuming leadership in 2022. However, challenges related to funding and staffing have hindered the pace of this rollout.
The Free Library aims to have all of its 54 branches offering weekend services by the close of the year. Currently, three branches remain closed due to long-term building issues or ongoing renovations, although they are anticipated to reopen later this fall.
As the community adaptation and recovery continue, it is important for residents to plan accordingly. Notably, all Free Library branches will be closed on Monday in observance of Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples Day. The efforts to expand library services reflect the broader commitment to fostering community engagement and access to education in Philadelphia.
