Third arrest made in case of Bronx man killed by beating and collisions with SUV and police vehicle.
A significant development has emerged in the investigation of the death of Isais Portillo, a man who died on August 8 after being assaulted in the Bronx. Law enforcement officials have arrested a third suspect, identified as Jacob Alvarez, 23, and charged him with manslaughter in connection with the incident that led to Portillo’s tragic death.
Alvarez’s co-defendants, Luis Torres and Felipe Reynoso, had been arrested earlier and are facing serious charges including attempted murder, assault, and attempted assault. Authorities describe Torres and Reynoso as the principal aggressors in the attack against Portillo, although Alvarez actively participated in the assault.
Portillo’s death occurred under harrowing circumstances. According to police reports, the assault took place near the intersection of College Avenue and East 166th Street in the Melrose neighborhood shortly before 4 a.m. The assailants reportedly punched and kicked Portillo in the head repeatedly, leaving him unconscious on the street. Shortly thereafter, a white BMW SUV struck him approximately ten minutes post-assault, failing to stop after the incident. A marked New York Police Department (NYPD) SUV, which was following the BMW, also ran over Portillo; however, the officers in the SUV did halt their vehicle to provide assistance.
Emergency Medical Services transported Portillo to Lincoln Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The city’s Medical Examiner’s office reported that Portillo died from severe brain damage and extensive bleeding, injuries consistent with a brutal physical assault.
Court documents reveal that investigators are dissecting the events that transpired on that fateful night, trying to determine the exact nature of the injuries inflicted by the vehicles involved and whether they could have contributed to the fatality. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to establish a clearer timeline and gather additional evidence.
