Thousands of pilgrims assemble in Saudi Arabia for the annual Hajj pilgrimage.
Hajj, one of the Five Pillars of Islam, represents a profound spiritual journey and is a mandatory act of worship for every Muslim who possesses the financial and physical capability to undertake the pilgrimage. This year, Saudi Arabia is witnessing an impressive influx of more than 1.5 million foreign pilgrims who have arrived to partake in the sacred rituals of Hajj. The Hajj Ministry’s spokesperson, Ghassan al-Nuwaimi, confirmed the estimated number for foreign attendees on Wednesday, highlighting the significance of this annual event, which draws millions from across the globe. In 2022, the pilgrimage welcomed approximately 1,611,310 international participants.
As pilgrims make their way to Arafat, a vital landmark during the Hajj, many navigate the challenging terrain on foot, carrying their belongings under sweltering temperatures approaching 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). The Day of Arafat, traditionally recognized as the most sacred day in the Islamic calendar, is a moment when the faithful believe that God draws near to them, offering forgiveness and grace.
Mount Arafat, a prominent rocky elevation located southeast of Mecca, is steeped in religious significance. Revered in the Quran, it is the site where the Prophet Muhammad delivered his final sermon during his last pilgrimage. Pilgrims spend the day in heartfelt prayer and reflection on Arafat from midnight until sunset, embracing a shared spiritual experience that transcends geographical boundaries.
At sunset, the faithful transition from Arafat to Muzdalifah, a midway point where they gather pebbles for the symbolic “stoning of the devil,” an act laden with profound spiritual meaning.
In preparation for the influx of pilgrims, Saudi Arabia has invested considerable resources into enhancing crowd control and safety measures. This year, the challenge of managing the large numbers of attendees has been coupled with addressing the high temperatures. The Minister of Health, Fahad bin Abdulrahman Al-Jalajel, announced the planting of 10,000 trees to provide shade, an increase in hospital bed capacity, and a tripling of paramedic services to ensure the well-being of the pilgrims.
To mitigate the impacts of heat, authorities have recommended that pilgrims remain sheltered in their tents during the peak sun hours of 10 AM to 4 PM on Thursday. The introduction of misters designed to provide a cooling effect at the base of the mount further exemplifies the commitment to creating a safe and spiritually enriching environment for all participants.
